Good news about Nepal in German News paper
This morning, happy news comes to my door! The happy news doesnot belong to my small family here but about my country. The happy news comes through the local daily newspaper named "Goettinger Tageblatt" meaning "Daily News paper from Goettingen". In the back cover of the news paper, there is the news about the world's shortest man, Khagendra Thapa Magar. When I saw the photo (in the left), I thought that what a nepalese face?! Then, I narrowed down my viewing and read the news about, actually he is nepalese but not the same one what I am looking for. I didnot realize the main person who made us proud, Khagendra! I didnot realise him in the beginning thinking that it is the doll between two people. But the news made me wrong! He was really the big man to make my country proud, he was Khagendra Thapa magar. He is the shortest man in the whole world. The news was about the celebration of his 18th Birthday. The paper says that the former shortest man in the world, named He Pingping (China) was 73 centimeter tall.Khagendra Thapa magar is 17 cm shorter than earlier shortest person in the world. The news made me happy this morning and provide lots of inspiration to. The small (short man) made our country proud where many tall (socalled) and big people doing nothing for the sake of country. I salute the shortest man of the world! We extend our best wishes for his long life and better future!

TOPIC
Adaptation of forest trees to climatic change - Diversity of drought responses in Douglas-fir provenances
BACKGROUND
Global climate change will result not only in increased air temperatures but also in an increase of drought periods in Central Europe. In order to mitigate the effects of climate change the aim of this research program is to understand the diversity of drought responsive mechanisms in trees and to develop tools and assays to identify tree provenances which are adapted to future climatic conditions and drought.
For this purpose, intraspecific differences in adapted drought responsive mechanisms will be studied in various provenances of Douglas-fir from the molecular to the organism level. Currently we are looking to fill 5 PhD positions in the following areas:
• A MOLECULAR PLANT PHYSIOLOGIST to characterise the regulation of drought responses (Project 1)
• A BIOINFORMATICS SCIENTIST or PLANT EVOLUTIONARY GENETICIST for SNP detection and molecular marker development (Project 2)
• An ECOPHYSIOLOGIST for stable isotope analysis and metabolite profiling (Project 3)
• Two ECOPHYSIOLOGISTS or BIOCHEMISTS to study the regulation of isoprenoid metabolism and emission patterns of volatile organic compounds (Project 4)
PREREQUISITES
Applicants should hold a M.Sc. or equivalent (German Diploma) in a discipline relevant to one of the above specified projects (e.g. biology, forestry, environmental sciences, biochemistry, biogeochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular biology, ecology, population genetics). The projects require a high level of autonomy and organization. Extended periods of field work at experimental sites in Germany might be required. The applicants must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in conducting interdisciplinary research and should be willing to co-operate with the members of the research team.
Earliest starting date is December 1, 2009 or later.

The Tropentag Conference 2009 was just completed yesterday. It was organized in beautiful city Hamburg in Germany from 6-8 October 2009. This conference was jointly organized by BMZ, GTZ/BEAF, ATSAF, the Eiselen-Stiftung, the DAAD and the DFG. In the conference more than 700 hundreds participants (practitioners, promoters, professors, researchers, academicians, activists, students....) were actively participated to cross-share on the technology, innovations, research findings and experiences from different countries in the world. The major focus of conference was International Research on Food Security, Natural Resources Management and Rural Development under the Biophysical and Socio-economic Frame Conditions for the Sustainable Managem
ent of Natural Resources. The presentation were divided under 11 different themes like i)Desertification, sustainable management and global conservations, ii) Climate change, carbon, soil and water iii) Diversity and conservation, iv) crop science and land use, v) Animal sciences, vi) Forest management and perennial crops, vii) Institutions and macro-economics, viii) Food security, nutrition and health, ix) Engineering, x) Participation and xi) Micro-economics. On top of that, GTZ also shared the institutional approaches to development of biophysical and socio-economic frame conditions for the sustainable management of natural resources.In the conference, about 30 Nepalese Professionals, Researchers, Students and Practitioners... also participated and shared their research findings and innovations through oral and poster presentations. The presence of the Nepalese was remarkable in terms of numbers of the participants and the numbers of sharing of poster and oral presentations.
There were four presentation from the members of Goettingeli Nepalese Society (GöNeS). Three oral presentations from Dev Raj Gautam/Netra Bhandari, Jeetendra Mahat and Dr. Lok Nath Paudel and a poster from Rajendra K.C. were to follow the long and successful continuation of GöNeS members participation in Tropentag. Dev Raj Gautam and Netra Bhandari presented the sensational issue on "Community Forest Management in Nepal for Achieving Millennium Development Goals", Dr. Lok Nath presented "Socio-economic and Biophysical Conditions for the Sustainable Livestock Management: A Case Study of Nepal", Jeetndra Mahat presented on his research entitled "An Assessment of Carbon Sequestration Potential of Different Land Use Systems in Leyte, Philippines" and Rajendra K.C. presented a poster entitled "Does Community Forestry Survive on Restructuring New Nepal?" All the presentations made by our Nepalese friends were among the excellent presentation made there. You can view the presentation in coming days in our blog and you can contact us if you need the hard copy of our presentation.
The next Tropentag 2010 is due for 14-16 September 2010 in Zurich, Switzerland. We wish to get larger participation from Nepalese scholars there!

The Tropentag 2009 congress was just completed yesterday. It was organized from 6-8 October 2009 in Hamburg. Hamburg is one of the big city situated in northern part of of Germany. In the conferences, about 700 Professors, Researchers, Academicians, Students, Activists, Practitioners .... were actively participated. Many of them presented their research findings through oral and poster presentations. Major focus of this conference was "International Research on Food Security, Natural Resources Management and Rural Development" in Tropical countries and divided into 8 different themes. The organizer of this important congress were BMZ, GTZ/BEAF, ATSAF, the Eiselen-Stiftung, the DAAD and the DFG.
In this conference, about 25 Nepalese professors, researchers and students also participated.These participants were come from forestry, agriculture, animal science, social science and so on. They also presented their research findings and experiences through oral and the poster presentations. The next "Tropentag 2010" is due for 14-16 September 2010 in Zurich, Switzerland. Dashain at Maine, US: Part 2/2
We Nepali Communities belonging to University of Maine faculties, students and their family celebrated our General Festival Dashain 2066 amid huge participation of all most all Nepali personnel residing in the University of Maine with lot of fun and enjoyment of day-long program of cooking, drinking eating, playing, singing and dancing.
